There are so many staples that come pre-made the grocery store these days. Many of these things are not only more expensive, but also full of preservatives or extra fat or sugar that are totally unnecessary. We’ve become accustomed to the pre-made stuff, but you can make it better, healthier, and cheaper!

The Man will sell you refried beans for around $1.00 or more for maybe 12 oz of cooked beans, plus 3 ounces of some oils, salts, and other flavorings. I can get 1 lb of dried pinto beans for $0.49, and then after soaking and cooking, its really around 2 lbs of refried goodness. All bean, all pure, vegetarian, fat free, and no Hydrogenated fats.

She was right. It’s never been easier. And according to Dr. Fuhrman, we should be eating 1 cup of beans a day!!!! After all, beans are a staple in all of the places where people live significantly longer and healthier lives. That makes me want to eat beans every day!

How to cook refried beans in an Instant Pot (no soaking)

If you have an Instant Pot, I highly recommend using it to make refried beans! It’s quick and the beans turn out so well. And you don’t even have to soak them!

The instructions are simple:

  1. Spray the pot with cooking spray. Chop half an onion and throw it in.
  2. Rinse 1.5 cups of pinto beans and dump them in (no soaking). Now add 3 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  3. Cook on high pressure for 35 minutes (use Manual mode). Allow for a natural release.
  4. Transfer cooked beans and water to a blender. Add 1 teaspoon of cumin and one teaspoon of red chili powder.
  5. Pulse until they reach the desired consistency. If you want chunkier re-fried beans, simply mash them instead of using a blender.
Homemade refried beans have no fat and no preservatives!

Serve warm, topped with cheese and cilantro. Or allow to cool and freeze in ziplock bags for the future. These refried beans freeze well!

Notes for the Instant Pot: always remember to have the steam valve closed when pressure cooking. It takes around 10 minutes for pressure to build, then 35 to cook, then maybe 20 for a natural release, so plan on at least an hour to cook these beans.

How to cook refried beans in a Crockpot (no soaking)

Here’s your recipe for slow cooker re-fried beans. Again, no need to soak your beans!

  1. Spray slow cooker with cooking spray.
  2. Rinse 1.5 cups of pinto beans and dump them in (no soaking). Now add 5 cups of water and 1 teaspoon of salt.
  3. Cook on LOW for 8 hours or HIGH for 4.
  4. Transfer cooked beans and as much of the liquid as you need to a blender (you will probably only need about a cup of the liquid). Add 1 teaspoon of cumin and one teaspoon of red chili powder.
  5. Pulse until they reach the desired consistency. If you want chunkier re-fried beans, simply mash them instead of using a blender.

Ingredients

  • 1.5 cups dry pinto beans
