Tantrums can be cringe-worthy, especially when in public, but anyone who has had a child understands that these outbursts have nothing to do with ‘bad’ parenting. This father recently shared his story with the Bump about his daughter’s latest tantrum. He was confident enough to ignore the looks of strangers sitting in the restaurant and knew that he was doing all he could to fix the issue at hand.
This dad reminds us that all parents can do while experiencing a tantrum in public is work to teach the child that this behavior is unacceptable. When a child is young they don’t understand why some behaviors are appropriate and some aren’t, and that’s not the child’s fault and that’s not the parents’ fault.
The Lesson in Tantrums
Parents need to use these tantrums to their advantage and work to teach their children. It’s important to calm down your child and take them out of the environment if feasible. Then the parent should try to help the child understand why that behavior won’t work in the given environment. Chances are, it will happen again but eventually, your child will learn, as all functioning adults have.
