Rehab Addict’s Nicole Curtis has been defending her choice to breastfeed her toddler for months. She’s practicing baby-led weaning with her 30-month-old son, Harper, and she’d like to remind her critics that it’s not like she’s breastfeeding a preteen.
“I keep saying, it’s not like he’s 7 or 8—he’s still a baby,” she tells PEOPLE. “Every single day I have to weather criticism about how my child is too old to breastfeed. But when he weans, it’s going to be his decision. I truly believe it’s the child’s choice.”
That choice happens to be complicating an ongoing custody battle between Curtis and her ex, Shane Maguire. Curtis learned she was pregnant shortly after splitting from Maguire, and he was granted both paternity and joint custody when Harper was 6 months old. But agreeing to the terms of joint custody has proved challenging for the former couple, especially when it disrupted Curtis’s plans to exclusively breastfeed.
